Zusammenfassung

A propulsion system that made ships maneuverable in a new way-this groundbreaking invention was achieved in 1926 by the Austrian engineer Ernst Schneider. His idea for a novel type of propeller was first proven in model tests at the Vienna Model Basin. Today, the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) ranks among the most significant maritime inventions of the 20th century and has be-come indispensable in tug and ferry operations, the offshore sector, and numerous specialized applications.

This richly illustrated book comprehensively traces the history, technical foundations, and international success story of the propeller. Drawing on contemporary sources, previously unpublished archival material, and current research findings, it offers fascinating insights into a technical development that set new standards. With great expertise, the two authors illustrate how a bold engineering concept from the 1920s evolved into a highly efficient propulsion system used worldwide. In addition to technical milestones, the book also focuses on the people behind them. The portraits of key figures-above all Ernst Schneider-invite readers on an exciting journey marked by precision and inventiveness. At the same time, the book offers a glimpse into the future of a propulsion system that has retained its innovative power to this day. A well-researched and fascinating standard work for engineers, historians and maritime experts.

Birgit Jürgens (born 1963) studied German and history at the University of Rostock and graduated with a teaching degree. In 1993, she earned her doctorate with a dissertation titled "The Bund Deutscher Mädel from 1933 to 1945." After completing postdoctoral studies at the University of Hamburg, she worked as a freelance historian. Since 2005, she has also been teaching German at the private vocational school operated by J.M. Voith. In 2002, she co-authored the book "The Fascination of the Voith-Schneider Propeller" with Werner Fork to mark the 75th anniversary.

Dirk Jürgens (born 1962) studied naval architecture at the University of Rostock, where he also worked as a research assistant in both research and teaching. In 1994, he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the hydromechanics of the Voith Schneider Propeller. Starting in 1993, he worked in the research department of the Hamburg shipyard Blohm + Voss. His work there focused on the areas of propulsion, maneuvering, and the seakeeping behavior of ships. In 1999, he moved to Voith in Heidenheim and has since served as Vice President Research & Development at Voith Turbo Marine.
