A funeral paid for in 1938. For a woman born in 2009.
Iris Quarry is on the floor of a cold office doing a reconciliation nobody asked for when she finds it. A pre-need account at her family's funeral home, opened the eleventh of November 1938, paid in full in cash - eleven weeks' wages for the woman who walked in and handed it over.
It has never been closed. It has been carried in the accounts every year for ninety-five years, and four generations of Quarrys have signed it off without ever once looking at what it was made of.
And the date of birth on it is the fourth of March 2009.
There is a girl of twenty-four at Zerbe township with that name and that birthday. She works at a garden center on the Trevorton road. She has never heard of Bellmount.
Somebody is going to have to tell her.
A complete case in twenty-one chapters, from the Quarry & Sons series.
