Born in Atlanta in 1890, Dick "Cannonball" Redding enjoyed a prolific career in a variety of Black baseball leagues. Redding was understandably famous in his era. From 1911-1921, Redding had the most wins (119), strikeouts (1,082), and complete games (165). He also threw thirty no hitters in his career (and seven in one year!) and was among the handful of players in the conversation for the greatest Negro Leagues player of all time. He pitched against Babe Ruth and Pop Lloyd. But he passed away at 58 without any children and is largely forgotten now.
Cannonball is baseball broadcaster Tim Hagerty's effort to help us remember one of the most dominant pitchers of the Deadball Era. A man famous for his fastball on the field and his easy-going demeanor off the field. He played on seven Negro League teams, a Cuban League team, and managed the Brooklyn Royal Giants in his twenty-year career.
